Did somebody just say the "S" word?

Say it isn't so!?  I have been getting reminders over and over the past week that it is nearly time to start thinking about Back to School.  Yes, the dreaded "S" word....School.  The word so many youngsters, parents, and teachers dread thinking about as the lazy days of summer come to an end for yet another year.  I have friends who HATE the end of summer and back to school because they LOVE having their children home with them all summer long.  Then I have friends who do cartwheels when they think of the return of school so they can get their lives back and enjoy some peace and quiet around the home.  I don't know about you, but I have mixed emotions.  As much as I love summer and the care free schedule, there is something about new school supplies, finding out who your teacher is, getting back in to a routine, and the anticipation of football games and a yummy cup of pumpkin spice latte on a damp autumn morning that entice me to plunge forward in to the next season.  But then I think of the summer fun, late nights around the campfire, staying up late to watch fireworks, and the excitement of summer vacation--it makes me want to hit the rewind button and do it all over again!!

With all of these mixed emotions, it is easy to get caught up in the craziness of what it means to switch gears this time of year and put things that really matter on the back burner.  If you are a mom with school age children in particular, who wants to squeeze every ounce of fun out of summer, there is just barely enough time to do all that is required to get those kids back to school.  Personally, I WANT to embrace the change ahead and try really hard to make this year better by being MORE organized, MORE on top of the added responsibilities, MORE committed to fixing healthy meals for my family, and MORE on top of my game.  But shortly after the mad dash for the 1st day of school, where all of the tissue boxes, crayons, pens, pencils and notebooks are tucked in the back pack and everything is neatly in order, for me it all starts to unravel.  Usually within a couple weeks of the start of the school year (right after Labor day), it all starts to go crazy!  The pre-planning I had done for meals has gone by the wayside, the schedule has more changes than one can imagine, and most days I meet myself coming and going.  

For those who do not have school age children at home, the challenges of this time of year are equally as real.  There are many re-adjustments we need to make every August and September as we get ready for the season changes ahead.  For those of us who love summer sun, fun and time with friends, it can almost be unnerving at the thought of another Fall and Winter season looming ahead.  What are we to do?  For women of all ages, I think the challenges can be daunting as we try to be everything to everyone in our circles of influence.  Whether we are single or married, with or without kids--women participate in a balancing act everyday.  We try to fulfill so many roles and ultimately lose sight of who we really are in the process.
